BackgroundITIL is a widely accepted best practice framework which provides a systematic and professional approach to the management of IT service provision. It is owned by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) who have recently issued version 3. ITIL is supported by a user group and vendor, the itSMF.What's Included in ITILThere are now five core books in ITIL: Service Strategy, Service Design, Service Transtition, Service Operation and Continuous Service Improvement. These provide a business-driven approach to the management of IT Services that specifically addresses the strategic business value generated by the IT organisation and the delivery of high quality IT services. ITIL is designed to focus on the people, processes and technology issues that IT organisations face. What's Involved in Using ITILBecause ITIL covers so many facets of IT service management, it is most common for organisations to focus on implementing processes in a phased manner. Common starting processes are incident and problem management, change management and configuration management.Implementation usually means producing a short, tailored guide, plus supporting documents like checklists and document templates. A CMDB (configuration management database) may also be required. An external consultant's experience, expertise and objectivity can shorten the tailoring process and improve the chances of a successful implementation.
